COPE April Newsletter
============================================================
Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien
Dear COPE Families:

When we lose someone we love, we never move on, we move forward.
We learn to take small steps. When we fall down, we struggle to get up
and then move forward again.

We are not the person we once were. We are forever changed and it takes time to know and understand this new person with patience and empathy and self love.

There are many new qualities that grieving brings out in each of us. For me, it was the spiritual person I have become. I am more compassionate and a better listener. There are many new challenges that I have had to face…my vulnerability, fear, making responsible choices for myself and my family. There are things I have done since my loss that I never thought I could do. And there are things that I have learned to enjoy in this unexpected and unwanted life that I could never have imagined.

If you ask yourself these questions, you might find and embrace the new you—

What new qualities has grieving brought out in you?
What new challenges have you had to face?
What have you done since your loss that you never thought you could do?
What have you learned to enjoy in this unexpected and unwanted life?

Embracing each of you, I wish you peace,

Lilly

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

Healing Tip for April—Creating new Rituals
Celebrating holidays, like Easter and Passover, can be challenging for grieving families. It will never be the same without your child or sibling but you can make some changes to make this time meaningful. It is special and appropriate to create some kind of ritual that acknowledges the person’s absence. New rituals at the holidays allow you an opportunity to cherish the memories while creating new ways to cope. These will be different for each family but you might consider adding candle lighting, changing traditional foods to your child or sibling’s favorite food, sharing good memories around your holiday table. Whatever you choose to do, it can help you to not ignore the changes in your family and can give you the means to cope through painful and difficult emotions.

Poem

IF YOU, I WILL

If you
let me
reveal my-
self to
you, I
will dance
on light
skip on
sunbeams, I
will fill
you completely
and never
lose you.
If you
see me
right here
like this
I will.

The Sun Is Snowing: Poetry & Prose by C. JoyBell C.

Safe Passage: Words to Help the Grieving
by Molly Fumia

The loss of a loved one is one of the most traumatic experiences we will ever face. This wise and profound book of reflections for the grieving offers a compassionate companion for those who have lost a loved one. Each page offers new words for contemplation, and the book can be read cover to cover or pages chosen at random to find inspiration to make it through another day.
Safe Passage guides the reader through the grief process–from the blackest night to the slow, gentle dawn of acceptance, unexpected wisdom, and new possibilities.
Excerpt:
“I’ll cry with you,”
she whispered
“until we run out of tears.
Even if it’s forever.
We’ll do it together.”
There it was . . . a simple
promise of connection.
The loving alliance of
grief and hope that
blesses both our breaking
apart and our coming
together again.

COPE Golf Outing Event
Monday, May 19th
Muttontown Club in East Norwich, NY
Register NOW for COPE’s eighth annual golf outing, to be held this year on Monday, May 19, 2014 at the Muttontown Club in East Norwich, NY. Past year’s events have sold out for golfers and dinner guests, and we look forward to another successful event this year.
At this year’s golf outing, we will be honoring former COPE board member Michael Corpuel and the Corpuel and Brown families who generously donate their camp, Camp Wayne, every year for COPE Camp Erin NYC®. The COPE golf outing is a great opportunity for individuals and organizations to create awareness of their missions or pay tribute to a loved one, and for parents and siblings to honor their child/sibling, as well as the Corpuels and Browns. For those in the camping and camping supply industries, the outing is also an opportunity for exposure amongst would-be campers and camp directors.
Additionally, the outing raises 75% of COPE’s budget for the year, and since we do not ask families to pay for most of the support groups, workshops and events we offer, we rely on this important fundraiser to bring in enough money to fund our programs.
Registration materials were mailed the first week of March, so please do not delay in sending in your registration once you receive it. You can also sign up as a sponsor, register to golf or attend the dinner, purchase an ad in our journal, buy raffle tickets, or make a donation to the event ONLINE by clicking here (https://app.etapestry.com/hosted/COPE/Registration.html).

Journal ads are due by April 14th so please don’t delay in signing up!

For additional information about sponsoring or attending the golf outing, or volunteering at the event, please contact Erica Berg Gavin, COPE Golf Outing Coordinator, at elberg@verizon.net.
