Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien

When someone we love dies, a part of us dies with them. We are forever changed and we’ve lost a part of the person we once were.  How do we find ourselves through the depths of our pain?

In Grief Quest (the book I co-authored with I. J. Weinstock), we say that when you lose someone, it’s time to find yourself. Finding more of yourself is part of the healing process. With the Find Yourself questions offered in Grief Quest, you might ask yourself:

  • Before your loss, what was your greatest passion?
  • What do you regret not having done so far in your life?
  • When in your life have you felt most passionate and alive?

For me, finding myself after my daughter’s loss meant rediscovering my love of painting. But instead, I felt a deep pull within me, I like to call “a heart tug,” guiding me to art therapy and back to a path with direction. Art therapy helped me and ultimately helped others in COPE.

A bereaved father, after losing his child, found himself through performing comedy. Somehow this comedian found his passion again in a missing part of himself that once was alive.

How does one find comedy in grief? What could he possibly laugh about? How did performing comedy help Bart Sumner, a grieving father, find his way? How can we learn to find our way from the path of others, even if it is one very different from our own?

Please join us for COPE’s Comedy Improv Grief Workshop on April 8th and 9th to hear the story of another bereaved parent who, out of love for his son, has committed himself to helping others through comedy.

Holidays are a difficult time to find a reason to smile, let alone laugh. With so much more missing than just ourselves, it is important to be with those you feel safe to be yourself…to cry, to laugh, to love and be loved.

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, PhD, LCSW

Time to Cry, Time to Laugh

When we grieve it can be hard, at times to imagine laughing again. Often, people are surprised when they find themselves laughing nervously or making a joke. There’s a dissonance that can make you wonder, ‘Why am I laughing at a time like this?’’ It’s more common than you would expect for people to use laughter in times of grief. Humor can be both a defense mechanism in times of crisis and a tool for coping long after the moment of the loss. After bracing yourself for sadness and seriousness it may be surprising to find humor instead; but this type of reaction is normal. More importantly, it is healthy.

Health benefits of laughter include

  • Lowering blood pressure
    • Lower blood pressure reduces your risk of strokes and heart attacks.
  • Reducing stress hormone levels
    • When you reduce the level of stress hormones your body produces it both cuts anxiety and stress that impact your body.
  • It’s a fun ab workout
    • Laughter can help you tone your abs. When you are laughing, the muscles in your stomach expand and contract, similar to when you intentionally exercise your abs.
  • Improving cardiac health
    • Laughter is a great cardio workout. It gets your heart pumping and burns a similar amount of calories per hour as walking at a slow to moderate pace.
  • Releasing of endorphins
    • Endorphins are the body’s natural pain-killers. By laughing, you can release endorphins, which can help ease chronic pain and make you feel good all over.
  • Producing a general sense of well-being
    • There’s time to cry and time to laugh: Both are healing.

Consider coming to laugh with our special guest, Bart Sumner, at his healing Improv Workshop on April 8th and 9th.

Poem

The truest words of all: I will not forget you.
You are in my waking thoughts,
my sweetest memories, my dearest dreams.
I will not forget you.
You have touched my soul, opened my eyes,
changed my very experience of the universe.
I will not forget you.
I see you in the flowers, the sunset,
the sweep of the horizon
and all things that stretch to infinity.
I will not forget you.
I have carved you on the palm of my hand.
I carry you with me forever.

Healing Improv: A Journey Through Grief to Laughter

By Bart Sumner

In 2009 Bart Sumner’s life was shattered when his 10-year-old son, David, suffered a traumatic brain injury at football practice and died in his arms. Finding a way back to the road forward in a world where mourners are told “He’s in a better place” or to “Get over it” is a daunting and painful journey. He came to realize that the twenty-five plus years he spent as a performer and teacher of improvisational comedy was not only the key to his own survival, but also a powerful tool to help others mired in grief. Healing Improv: A Journey Through Grief to Laughter is an emotional and honest recounting of his family’s trek through grief to the founding of a nonprofit that provides no-cost Comedy Improv Grief Workshops for others suffering with loss. Mr. Sumner’s approach is unique in its application of improv comedy exercises to grief treatment. Healing Improv includes many of the improv games used at Healing Improv workshops so that others can also benefit from the curative, life affirming fun. Pairing these techniques with his family’s powerful and touching story of survival makes this book a strong ally to those who feel lost and alone after tragedy strikes, providing comfort and hope. 10% of author proceeds go to Healing Improv, a non-profit charity.

If you have a book to recommend which you think will help our families along their path of healing, please email Stacey at scareri@copefoundation.com.

COPE thanks you for your support.

COPE Parent Column

April 2016

My daughter Elissa was 36 and living in Paris with her husband, Joe, and was going to pursue writing for magazines for young adults and adolescents.  Elissa was talented in these fields, edited high school and college magazines and wrote a lot always.  Her observations about the world, in which she traveled to all continents except Antarctica were poignant, insightful and funny.  Elissa volunteered in Zambia, Africa, for her Masters in Public Health, for a semester.  Although she found it tragic and somewhat hopeless, she made friends.  She died when traveling with her father, husband, brothers and their girlfriends on a sailboat in Jost van Dyke off Tortola, British Virgin Islands.  They were visiting the “Bubble Pool,” a reportedly safe site, when a wave knocked her into a tunnel of currents and she, a good swimmer, drowned.  Her husband, Joe, and brother, Paul, risked their lives to save hers.

Everyone’s loss is equally tragic and COPE helps me alot.  Wed, March 9, was the fourth anniversary of her death. Her brother, Paul, will be married in April.  It won’t be the same without her, but we will have a wonderful time as Elissa would have wanted.  Thank you for keeping a piece of who she was alive.

NYC Young Adult Sibling Support Group –

Express Interest Now

Location TBD in Manhattan – Looking for Space

The COPE young adult sibling support group in Manhattan is going to be starting up again soon! If you are an adult sibling interested in attending, please email Karen Flyer at Karen@copefoundation.com. The group will likely meet on the 1st or 3rd Wednesday evening of the month, with exact date and time determined by facilitator and space availability.

We are looking for office space to hold our group. If you work in an office in Manhattan that would have space we could borrow one night per month, please let Karen know. The space does need to be large – the group tends to have 6-10 people. A licensed social worker employed by COPE would be running the group.
