Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien

COPE families gathered this past week for another Memorial Labyrinth dedication. The day was sunny, the labyrinth beautiful with flowers and newly dedicated benches and bricks inscribed with powerful words of love.

Days before, as the new memorial bricks were being installed, I could feel the love pouring in. Then the night of the event it was literally pouring. Lightning and thunderstorms moved through, the weather symbolic of all that we can’t control.

The sky was dark and mimicked our emotions. Huddled in the COPE House, we hoped and waited for the light to break through. For a brief time the rain stopped and we gathered at the labyrinth for a dedication of benches and bricks in loving memory of our beloved children, siblings and loved ones.

How ironic that our COPE Memorial would be a labyrinth Connecting Our Paths Eternally; bringing us together on sacred ground, surrounded by benches and a circle of bricks dedicated to all those we love.

Standing in a circle, each next to their newly dedicated bricks and benches, we honored our loved ones by reciting their names. As the last name was spoken it once again began to rain.

We returned to the safety of the COPE House and found the comfort of connection. Even when there are no words, there is comfort in being together with others who understand.

By walking the labyrinth, we are taking the time to connect with ourselves, to heal, find peace, and reach out to our loved ones. When we walk the labyrinth, there is a releasing, a letting go of the details of our life. When we reach the center, we reach a place of openness, where we can remember and receive, release and return.

The plaque at the labyrinth contains this poem—”Those we love don’t go away. They walk beside us everyday. Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear.” Whenever we walk the labyrinth, they’re there to walk with us, “unseen, unheard but always near. ” Always reminding us that we’re all connected.

I’ve been told that butterflies, like birds, carry messages.  Because they fly at a very high frequency, they can pick up vibrations of our loved ones and be a sign of their presence.

Last week, on the day of the brick installation, I was sitting on a bench planning the dedication.  A butterfly hovered close by and rested on my arm. It fluttered from my arm to my neck, to my face, and to my lips. It then flew to the special man who installed our labyrinth and lingered by him. I couldn’t help but think that it was a message from our loved ones saying, “Thank You.”

Wishing you butterflies, dragonflies, feathers and whispers of love,

Lilly

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, PhD, LCSW

The Next Level of Healing is Helping

The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.

~ Barack Obama

You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late . . . the love of our neighbor in all its fullness simply means being able to say to him, ‘What are you going through?’

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Depending upon where you are in your personal grief journey, you may come to a point when you feel that you want to channel your pain, and the time and energy you once devoted and invested in the relationship with your loved one, into something productive and meaningful. You might want to do this through the gift of volunteering. Because you are someone who truly understands the grieving process, you may feel that you are ready to reach out to others who are suffering the pain of loss. As you find your own way through the many challenges of grief, you have a great deal to share with others who are suffering: you can identify with their struggles, empathize with their sorrows and doubts, and offer valuable information and support. You can do this by attending a support group and sharing your successful strategies for coping. You might want to be a peer mentor or a COPE Line volunteer. You may want to give of yourself, but not directly with other grievers. You may want to pursue personal interests, polish old skills and learn new ones, while making a positive difference in your community. Fundraising to support a cause or organization that you find meaningful can also be very satisfying. Finding a way to make meaning as you navigate through your grief journey can be a very beneficial part of the healing process.

Poem

To Where You Are

Who can say for certain, maybe you’re still here ~

I feel you all around me, your memory so clear.

Deep within the stillness I can hear you speak.

You’re still an inspiration ~

Can it be that you are mine forever, love

and you are watching over me from up above?

Fly me up to where you are beyond the distant star ~

I wish upon tonight to see you smile,

if only for awhile to know you’re there ~

A breath away’s not far to where you are.

Are you gently sleeping here inside my dream ~

And isn’t faith believing all power can’t be seen?

As my heart holds you just one beat away,

I cherish all you gave me everyday ~

‘Cause you are mine forever, love

watching me from up above.

And I believe that angels breathe

and that love will live on and never leave.

Fly me up to where you are beyond the distant star ~

I wish upon tonight to see you smile,

if only for awhile to know you’re there ~

A breath away’s not far to where you are.

I know you’re there ~

A breath away’s not far to where you are

Healing Grief, Finding Peace: 101 Ways to Cope with the Death of Your Loved One

By Louis LaGrand

Through Your Loss Comes The Strength to Grow

Whether the death of a loved one is sudden or follows a long battle with illness, there is no way to prepare for the loss of someone close. Grieving is painful, but you have a choice in how you cope with grief and – most importantly – how you adapt to the intense loss you’ve experienced.

Grief counseling expert Dr. Louis LaGrand describes 101 tips and prescriptions to help mourners through their tragic loss. His specific coping strategies offer practical advice, ultimately giving you pathways for achieving lasting inner peace by using the one thing you can control – your own response to grief.

Heal your inner grief and find peace by:
*Starting each day with an affirmative action
*Establishing a grief or worry time
*Planning in advance for birthdays, anniversaries, and important holidays
*Learning to enjoy new routines
*Letting go of “if onlys” and “what ifs”
*Never ruling out happiness

“Dr. LaGrand’s advice and recommendations reach from and to both heart and head … a powerful and important lesson about grief – that even in grief, we can still grow.” – Kenneth J. Doka, PhD, senior consultant, Hospice Foundation of America

If you have a book to recommend which you think will help our families along their path of healing, please email Stacey at scareri@copefoundation.com.

For the Latest News About COPE Camp Erin New York City!

August 26 – 28, 2016

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are enjoying this glorious summer!

Camp is around the corner and we are busy preparing curriculum and securing supplies. We are so excited for another great summer of helping grieving children and families. It is such gift to be able to reach children that are suffering and hurting so deeply inside. To be able to offer them grief education and  the opportunity to be with others on the same journey is incredibly rewarding. They learn they are not alone.

We have a majority of returning staff with some new volunteers excited to be on board. Would love to sit and chat, but I have a camp to get organized. Will tell you all about it in September.

Still have room for boys, so if you know anyone who might benefit form camp, please have them contact me at afuchs@copefoundation.com

Best,

Ann

For more information on Camp Erin, please email COPE-Camp Erin New York City Camp Director Ann Fuchs at afuchs@copefoundation.com or 914-552-6919.

NYC Young Adult Sibling Support Group – Express Interest Now

Location TBD in Manhattan – Looking for Space

The COPE young adult sibling support group in Manhattan is going to be starting up again soon! If you are an adult sibling interested in attending, please email Karen Flyer at Karen@copefoundation.com. The group will likely meet on the 1st or 3rd Wednesday evening of the month, with exact date and time determined by facilitator and space availability.

We are looking for office space to hold our group. If you work in an office in Manhattan that would have space we could borrow one night per month, please let Karen know. The space does need to be large – the group tends to have 6-10 people. A licensed social worker employed by COPE would be running the group.
