COPE December Newsletter

Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien

On Thanksgiving, I gave thanks for COPE, all of our facilitators, directors, and volunteers who have made support possible for so many families.
You were all in my thoughts as I felt the absence of my own love ones.

As I reflected, I remembered my first Thanksgivings many years ago without my daughter and husband. I spent most of the day crying in the car. This Thanksgiving I looked around the table and felt immense love and gratitude for my family and those who are here with me.

Every year is different because Holidays have forever changed! There is so much missing and we are missing  the ones we love.

It is a time when many of us spiral and we feel especially vulnerable. Our love is expressed in grief and our Love process is part of the grief process, as we find new ways to connect and create new relationships with our love ones.

Children are more resilient. They want to be happy. It’s okay to laugh and its okay to cry! There’s connection in crying, not disconnection, if you’re crying with people you feel safe with.

Giving yourself permission to be happy , even if it’s for the briefest of moments allows it to grow.

The death is the biggest part of your life right now but it’s only a small part of the love and life you shared. It’s important on birthdays, passing dates, and holidays to talk about your love ones with those closest to you. That love is a part of you. It is not past. It’s present. It’s always with you. These are the stories you get to share. It’s the other side of grief. You grieve hard because of how much you continue to love. And that love is an eternal connection.

Wishing each of you peace, love, comfort and connection through the holidays with the energy of your love ones surrounding you.

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, Ph.D., LCSW

Writing Through Your Grief
A poet can take all the grief from her heart
(the pain that can swell and break a heart)
and write it in fine black lines
on starchy white paper. . . .
–from Fine Black Lines, Lois Tschetter Hjelmstad
Writing through your grief, by keeping a diary of your feelings or writing about the loss of a loved one can be very helpful as your travel through your grief journey. Your words can witness your grief without judgment or reaction. They can create a safe space to express those things that are hard or impossible to say to another person.

Writing through grief has helped many people to cope with their losses. People who are grieving have written some of the best books that we have included in our book corner. But you do not need to be an accomplished or published author to use writing in a therapeutic way to sort out your thoughts and to express your emotions. Some people write letters to the lost loved one as a way of expressing how they feel. Others keep a daily journal of feelings. Others construct AlphaPoems, which are an easy and structured way to get started. You can write the alphabet, or the letters of your loved one’s name, vertically down the side of your page. Then write a poem in which each successive line begins with the next letter on the page. (It is xceptable to make xceptions for xtra hard letters.)

If you think writing might be something you would like to try, or even if you already do it—Join us on December 3rd at 2 pm when we will be kicking off our 2nd monthly writing workshop with a special event—Journaling Your Way Through the Holiday Season, with Patty Rossi. (Patty also leads our monthly writing workshop that meets on Wednesday night).

Poem

COPE Parent Sandi Bloomberg wrote this poem for her daughter in law.

Some Day
He’s just gone for a little while
Some day in the future
You’ll again see his smile

He’s just gone for a pause in time
And some day in the future
A reunion sublime

He’s just gone on to a better place
Where one day for sure
You’ll stand face to face

And love one another as you did before
In a place where you’ll have
Each other once more

His very essence wherever you go
Will be felt
His way of letting you know

That he’s always with you
And showing his love
Though it now comes from Heaven above

Yes the material ties you had did sever
But in your heart and mind
Michael lives on forever

COPE Book Corner

Braving the Fire: A Guide to Writing About Grief and Loss
By Jessica Handler

Braving the Fire is the first book to provide a road map for the journey of writing honestly about grief and loss. Created specifically by and for the writer who has experienced illness, loss, or the death of a loved one, Braving the Fire takes the writers’ perspective in exploring the challenges and rewards for the writer who has chosen, with courage and candor, to be the memory keeper. It will be useful to the memoirist just starting out, as well as those already in the throes of coming to terms with complicated emotions and the challenges of shaping a compelling, coherent true story.

Loosely organized around the familiar Kübler-Ross model of Five Stages of Grief, Braving the Fire uses these stages to help the reader and writer though the emotional and writing tasks before them, incorporating interviews and excerpts from other treasured writers who’ve done the same. Insightful contributions from Nick Flynn, Darin Strauss, Kathryn Rhett, Natasha Trethewey, and Neil White, among others, are skillfully bended with Handler’s own approaches to facing grief a second time to be able to write about it. Each section also includes advice and wisdom from leading doctors and therapists about the physical experience of grieving.

Handler is a compassionate guide who has braved the fire herself, and delivers practical and inspirational direction throughout.

If you have a book to recommend which you think will help our families along their path of healing, please email Joy at Joy@copefoundation.com.
