Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien

Finding light in the darkness

Hanukah and Christmas are holidays of lights that come at the darkest time of the year. It’s not easy for some of us to find even a glimmer of light through the darkness of our grief.

Lights are messages of hope and often flicker after the passing of someone we love. I began to associate the flickering light with my daughter after her passing, and interpreted it as a message of love and a sign of our connection.

When we lose someone we love, the essence of their soul lives forever inside of us.

During the winter, when it’s so easy to stay inside and isolate, take the opportunity to go within and find the lights of love and memory that are forever there for you. Like the sun on a cloudy day, you can’t always see what’s hidden by your grief.

Make an intention for the New Year to do the things that your loved one loved to do.  Do it for yourself and share it with others, AND do them as often as you can.

When the clouds are blocking all the light, the sun is always there. The secret of being lives in the moment you break through your own clouds, to bring light and love into your life.

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, PhD, LCSW

Healing Tip: January 2016

As this New Year begins, people around us are setting their resolutions. We are all familiar with the usual resolutions to exercise more, lose weight, stop procrastinating, etc. But for those of us who are grieving, these resolutions may feel less important. The idea of getting through each new day, this year’s anniversaries and other grief triggering events can seem overwhelming. But there are some resolutions that can help to get through the difficult times. Here are some suggestions, but remember that as unique as your love is, so is your grief, and so will your resolutions be, too.

  • Drink plenty of water and eat healthfully
  • Engage in physical activity, walking or exercise, whatever it takes to get your body moving.
  • Make time for your grief and yourself. Sometimes you may need to slow down and pay respect to your feelings.
  • The best New Year’s resolution you can grant yourself is the resolution of hope. Have hope that the New Year will bring challenges that will turn into growth. Have hope that you can be patient with yourself and your grief, while trusting that the pain will lessen as the love deepens.

Grieving is a unique process. Finding what suits you best may take some time. If one resolution doesn’t work, don’t stop searching for what makes the process a little easier. As time continues, the grief does not go away. Instead, we learn how to live with the loss by learning how to cope with our feelings. Our loved ones who have passed away will always remain in our hearts surrounded by love that we have once shared.

Poem

Don’t Cry for me

Don’t cry for me now I have died, for I’m still here I’m by your side,

My body’s gone but my soul’s here, please don’t shed another tear,

I am still here I’m all around, only my body lies in the ground.

I am the snowflake that kisses your nose,

I am the frost, that nips your toes.

I am the sun, bringing you light,

I am the star, shining so bright.

I am the rain, refreshing the earth,

I am the laughter, I am the mirth.

I am the bird, up in the sky,

I am the cloud, that’s drifting by.

I am the thoughts, inside your head.

While I’m still there, I can’t be dead.

I’m Fine.: A Real Feelings Journal

by Dianne Morris Jones (Author), Monica N Ghali (Designer)

I’m Fine. A Real Feelings Journal invites you to move past the “I’m fine” response we reflexively give to the question of how we are and instead recognize and express our authentic emotional experience. Prompts on the right side of the journal offer you an opportunity to explore specific feelings through words, and the journal’s blank left side allows you to communicate your feelings through drawing, collages, doodling, or any other artistic expression. To accompany you on this important journey into inner awareness, I’m Fine offers inspiring quotes, a comprehensive list of feeling words, reflections to ponder, and a guide for further exploration through the lens of “The Guest House” by Rumi. Work and play through this journal on your own or find a partner or group for discussion and community. I’m Fine is a wonderful way to gain a deeper understanding of your deepest heart and soul and move steadily toward a life of greater authenticity and vulnerability.

If you have a book to recommend which you think will help our families along their path of healing, please email Stacey Careri at scareri@copefoundation.com.

COPE Parent Column

January 2016

We are honored to share a poem that COPE Parent Martha Guarini wrote about her son, Carmine Ambrosino. This past December 5th marked two years since he was taken too soon.

Son:

It is still unreal and unfathomable that you are no longer here…

It broke our hearts to lose you,

but you did not go alone.

A part of us went with you,

the day God took you home.

If tears could build a stairway,

and heartaches make a lane,

we’d walk our way to heaven,

and bring you back again.

In life we loved you dearly,

in death we love you still,

in our hearts you hold a place

that no one could ever fill.

I miss you everyday, I miss your smile, your beautiful eyes and most of all your KIND heart!!!

Love ya forever!!!

Melinda Sims has also shared the following, about her son, Ryan.

Thanksgiving 2015

Seems just yesterday that Ryan was enjoying Thanksgiving with us, just as he had for 23 Thanksgivings, sometimes at our home or at my sister-in-law’s or the home of another relative. Never dreamed a day would come when we wouldn’t be together at Thanksgiving. Never dreamed a day would come when we wouldn’t be together at all. How I took for granted those times. How I wish I could have them back. Wishing you a holiday that will be as peaceful as it could be. Wishing my child tonight will appear in my dreams.

COPE Individual Support, or “Buddy System”

For those bereaved parents and siblings not ready for a support group, or who wish to augment their support group experience with individual support, COPE offers a “buddy system.”  If you are in need of a buddy (a parent or sibling who shares your particular loss), OR if you wish to act as a buddy to a newly bereaved parent or sibling, please contact Stacey Careri at scareri@copefoundation.com.  Peer support is truly at the heart of COPE!
