COPE July Newsletter
============================================================
Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien
Dear COPE Families:

I’m excited that programs and support meetings are underway at our cozy COPE cottage in Eisenhower Park.

We began our Healing Series last month with a Yoga program and this past week with Expressive Art.

Many in the group who attended were surprised to find that no talent or previous art experience was necessary. Similar to how we drew in kindergarten, we worked with oil pastels to create a mandala.

The mandala is a circle with a center point. In various spiritual traditions, mandalas are used as a tool for focusing attention and establishing a sacred space for meditation. For me, the mandala is a graphic representation of a circle of love that never ends. Starting with the center of the circle and working outward, the repetition of blending color and creating design was indeed relaxing and meditative. We framed our finished mandalas with symbolic words and images that reminded us of our children. For each of the participants, it was a reflective time connecting with their child or sibling.

Next month we will be repeating a popular experiential Reiki workshop with calming energy and sound healing using toning bowls.

I hope you will take advantage of these opportunities to explore monthly alternative healing, in a supportive group setting, at our tranquil new COPE cottage.

Sending warm & loving thoughts,
Lilly

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

Healing Tip: July 2014

Walking Meditation
Now that the brutal winter and fickle spring have passed, it is much easier to be outside regularly. Meditation and mindfulness change our brains and our lives, reduce pain, anxiety, confusion and stress, boost the immune system and increase concentration, focus and compassion. In addition, the practice of meditation and mindfulness can assist in healing grief, because it helps to focus on the present moment, where grief resides. Walking meditation is practicing meditation while walking. Walking meditation can be just as profound as sitting meditation, and has the advantage of bringing the meditative experience into our activity. There is a tremendous richness of experience to become aware of as you walk. The body loves movement, and will reward you if you pay attention to how it feels! So much of the time we are caught up in our mental worlds — thinking of the past or future, planning, imagining… Paying attention to the body as you walk will help you to enjoy simply being.

Here are some websites that offer guides to meditation and walking meditation specifically:

Poem

Memory can only tell us what we were,
in the company of those we loved;
it cannot help us find what each of us, alone, must now become.
Yet no person is really alone;
those who live no more echo still within our thoughts and words,
and what they did has become woven into what we are.
~ Jewish prayer

All you need to do is “Join This Team” by clicking on the green button on the COPE Walk 12 Team page. The website will walk you through the process of creating your own fundraising page step-by-step. You can include photos and videos of your child or sibling, set your fundraising goal, customize a thank you and share the page with your friends and family. For those of you who prefer the “low tech” method of outreach, we do have template letters for you to send to your friends and family asking for their support of you as you walk. Please contact me if you would like a word version of this letter.
