COPE July Newsletter

Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien

Dear COPE Families,
“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal.
Love leaves a memory no one can steal.”
Vice President Joe Biden quoted this message from an Irish headstone in a beautiful letter he wrote to COPE in April, 2014. That letter now hangs on a wall at our COPE house as inspiration to the many parents and siblings who come together for support.
When I heard of the tragic passing of his son, Beau Biden, I couldn’t help but wonder how challenging it must be for someone who is constantly in the public eye to mourn and grieve. I wonder if he has the freedom to receive the support from other bereaved parents who can understand the pain and anguish he is going through, like we do at COPE.
I thought how fortunate we are to connect through COPE to find the help to live with our losses.
My thoughts turned to Beau’s young wife and children. Beau Biden experienced grief as a young child when he lost both his mother and younger sister in a car accident. I wondered if his children would ever go to a Camp Erin, a place that was not available to either Beau or my own children when they were young and grieving.
I contemplated the outpouring of messages and prayers being sent to Joe Biden and his family. I recalled the overwhelming love of family and friends when I was grieving the loss of my daughter. These letters and cards which describe my child are cherished stories and memories that I have to read over and over.
Thinking of the Vice President’s loss made me appreciate even more the various ways COPE supports families who are suffering the loss of a child.
Our hearts and prayers are with Joe Biden and his family and all of you who are living with love and loss.
Lilly

COPE Healing Tip of the Month
From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, LCSW
Healing Tip: July 2015

Grief Emergency Toolkit

The grief journey is travelled along a road filled with surprises: both good and bad, helpful and not so helpful. Are you prepared to deal with the unexpected? Just as you would on any other journey you are about to undertake, you need to pack an emergency toolkit. What should you have in your toolkit? Because everyone’s grief is unique, their toolkits will also be just their own. But here are some guidelines for what to pack:

A safe place—this could be an actual place where you find comfort, like curled up on your couch wrapped in an article of your lost loved one’s clothing or it could be the friend you can run to, who will listen without judging.

Snacks—well maybe not really food, but what nourishes you. For some this is a meaningful book or a piece of music. For some, this might be some comfort food. Maybe eat something that was a favorite of your loved one.

Water—It’s the summer so definitely stay hydrated. But for your toolkit, what is it that brings you back from feeling parched? For some it is helping someone else to help add meaning to your moment. For others it is activity, exercise or a project.

Think about what helps you when you hit a bump in the road. Make your own personal list of what should go in your toolkit. And then remember to use it.

Poem

A Letter From Above

Dearest Mommy and Daddy,

When you wonder the meaning of life and love
Know that I am with you.
Close your eyes and feel me kissing you
in the gentle breeze across your cheek.

When you begin to doubt that you shall ever see me again
Quiet your mind and hear me.
I am in the whisper of the heavens,
Speaking of your love.

When you lose your identity,
When you question who you are or where you are going,
Open your heart and see me.
I am the twinkle in the stars, smiling down upon you
Lighting the path for your journey.

When you awaken each morning
Not remembering your dreams
But feeling content and serene
Know that I was with you~
Filling your night with thoughts of me.

When you linger in the remnant pain
Wholeness seeming so unfamiliar,
Think of me and know that I am with you,
Touching you through the shared tears
of a gentle friend easing the pain.

As the sunrise illuminates the desert sky
In breathtaking glory, awaken your spirit.
Think of our time, all too brief, but ever brilliant.
When you were certain of us, together
When you were certain of your destiny.

Know that God created that moment in time
Just for us.
Dearest Mommy and Daddy,
I am with you always.

Poetry serves a unique role in our lives, distilling human experience and emotion down to truths as potent as they are brief. There are two times most people turn to it: for love and loss. Drumming Workshop for Parents and Adult Siblings
Wednesday, July 29th at 7:00 p.m. SHARP
Eisenhower Park in East Meadow (Field 6A)
Join COPE and healer Elissa Giotis for our next monthly “Healing from the Inside Out” workshop. The “Drumming Circle” will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the COPE House in Eisenhower Park, East Meadow (Field 6A).

Drumming is a practice that dates back to early times and can be found across many lands and cultures. Drumming has been found to promote emotional, physical and spiritual healing and is a form of self- expression. It has the power to foster feelings of connectedness to self and others.

The purpose of this workshop is to give opportunity to experience the positive effects of drumming and creating music with others. No experience playing drums or instruments is necessary. All that is required is an open mind and heart. Everyone will have a part in making original music as a group. The leader simply sets the pace with rhythms made on the drum. Some participants may find benefits to just listening, but we encourage active participation and will provide the instruments which include African drums (known as Djembe), frame drums and other smaller noise makers.

Leading the drum circle is Elissa Giotis, LCSW-R. Elissa is a hospice social worker who has some formal musical training in percussion instruments and discovered the power of the drum circle while on trip out West. She is joined by her friends and colleagues, Diane McNamara, LCSW-R and Barbara Horstmanshof, LPN who share the passion of making music on primitive instruments. Each brings their own dynamic personalities to the creative process making the experience all the richer.

Elissa and Diane have co-led drum circles over the past 10 years including Hospice Conventions and simple, informal gatherings. They look forward to sharing the wonder and fun of making music with others, so plan on this workshop being a good time while nurturing your body, mind and soul.

You MUST RSVP for this workshop to Karen Flyer at Karen@copefoundation.com by Friday, July 24th!

Parent Writing Workshop
COPE Writer’s Workshop Program
Meets Quarterly
COPE House at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow (Field 6A)
COPE parents, join us for the Third Journal Writing Workshop at a date TBD at 7:00 p.m. at the COPE House in Eisenhower Park, and learn how you too, can use the art of writing to help heal. In our first meetings, we explored writings from multiple authors, who shared their grief in a variety of ways. We learned the importance of keeping a journal, and how expressing our thoughts through the written word resonating in a more soulful way. We then began the process of writing responses to our own prompts, which we shared within the warm, safe confines of others ready to begin the journey as well. We learned there is no wrong…just write. We hope that you will take the time to join us for this truly one of a kind workshop. A pen is all that’s required!

Liz Yorio is the founder and facilitator of the Friends for Life Writing Workshop, a thriving writer’s group designed exclusively for Breast Cancer Survivors on Long Island. Her healing Journal Workshops and Anthology Writer’s Groups integrate her innate talent of honoring the individual with her extensive experience in writing workshop facilitation. She has successfully helped numerous clients discover their inner voices through a program that focuses on the fundamentals of writing, using journaling as a healing modality. Woven within the fabric of their lives, Elizabeth’s program has helped survivors delve deeper into the creative process as they learn to take risks with both their writing and themselves. A graduate of SUNY Albany, with a Master’s Degree in Education from Hunter College, Elizabeth taught in New York City for several years. Having worked closely with educators from Columbia University’s Writing Project as well as writing specialists from the Professional Development Lab in New York City’s District 2, Elizabeth has been able to successfully formulate a unique writer’s workshop that incorporates teachings from both youth and adult education. She is currently collaborating on her second Anthology.
