Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien
Dear COPE Fathers,
You are thought of and remembered by COPE on Father’s Day.
You are still a father even though your child isn’t here with you.
It is a day I honor my husband who was and will always be the wonderful father of my children. I am a mother because of him and I am eternally grateful to him for the precious gift of our children. Although we are separated physically, we are all connected in heart, soul and spirit.
My husband grieved the loss of our daughter very differently than I did. Even though he was less apt to speak of his feelings of loss, I knew how much he hurt.
Father’s Day without a child is just as emotionally heartbreaking for a father as Mother’s Day is for a mother.
My heart goes out to all the fathers in COPE who have lost a child, and all children who have lost a father.
What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us. – Helen Keller

COPE Healing Tip of the Month
From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, LCSW
Healing Tip: June 2015
When a loss hits us, we have not only the particular loss to mourn but also the shattered beliefs and assumptions of what life should be. These life beliefs must be mourned separately. Sometimes we must grieve for them first. We can’t grieve the loss if we are in the midst of “It’s not supposed to happen this way.” We intellectually know that bad things happen ~ but to other people, not us, and certainly not in the world we assumed we were living in . . . Your belief system needs to heal and regroup as much as your soul does. You must start to rebuild a new belief system from the foundation up, one that has room for the realities of life and still offers safety and hope for a different life: a belief system that will ultimately have a beauty of its own to be discovered with life and loss. Think of a lifeless forest in which a small plant pushes its head upward, out of the ruin. In our grief process, we are moving into life from death, without denying the devastation that came before.
— Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

Poem
I’m Here For You
By Sandi Bloomberg
Speak to me I hear you
Reach for me I’m there
Know that I am with you both
To show you how I care
I’m never far away from you
Always by your side
To make sure you’re safe and well
And be there as your guide
Look for me you’ll find me
In a rainbow or a cloud
A whisper of a breeze
Or thunder roaring loud
A flicker of a light bulb
A kiss upon your cheek
I’m always watching over you
And hear you when you speak
Never fear, I’m very near
I love you both so much
Look for me you’ll find me
In my gentle loving touch
Look up to the sky at night
At times when you are blue
The stars that you see twinkling
Are kisses I’m giving you
And when you’re missing me so much
Because I don’t seem near
Even though we cannot touch
Talk to me – I’ll hear
Some day I’ll hold you evermore
But til the time I do
All my hours are devoted
To watching over you
And if you listen carefully
When gentle breezes blow
You might just hear me whispering
How much I love you so…

The Wheel of Life: A Memoir of Living and Dying
by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, M.D., is the woman who has transformed the way the world thinks about death and dying. Beginning with the groundbreaking publication of the classic psychological study On Death and Dying and continuing through her many books and her years working with terminally ill children, AIDS patients, and the elderly, Kübler-Ross has brought comfort and understanding to millions coping with their own deaths or the deaths of loved ones. Now, at age seventy-one facing her own death, this world-renowned healer tells the story of her extraordinary life. Having taught the world how to die well, she now offers a lesson on how to live well. Her story is an adventure of the heart — powerful, controversial, inspirational — a fitting legacy of a powerful life.

COPE Sibling Recognition Award
Hi,
Thank you all for being here, and thank you COPE, Lillian, Spencer and Greer for this wonderful award.
As a stay at home mom of four it’s been a really long time since anyone has recognized me for anything… so this is really nice.
Just a few thoughts I’d like to share tonight.
About a month or so ago, I was at another charity event.
Cycle for Survival.
It’s a HIGH OCTANE, cardio cycling event that raises money for cancer research. While you are there you hear the most amazing, inspirational stories of survival, and the crowds are cheering… it’s really something.
And, I came home and thought, “WOW, how different our two charities are.”
NO ONE IS CHEERING on our side of the fence. As my husband says “COPE is the club you hope you are never a part of.” But, we are.
I would like to applaud so many people in this room tonight for just being here — BECAUSE when you prematurely lose someone you love just getting out of bed is a challenge. WE ARE THE SURVIVORS.
THAT IS WHERE COPE COMES IN.
The journey back to happiness is a long road, and I can tell you first hand it’s not a trip you can make alone.
When you speak to someone in the COPE network YOU know that THEY know exactly what you are feeling.
There were countless nights I spent on the phone with Spencer sharing my pain and him sharing his. It’s part of what got us through that time.
BUT it’s MORE than just the relationships you make at COPE. It is their approach to losing someone that is so special. They encourage us to stay connected to that person – I am so inspired when I go to FACEBOOK, and I see how Greer shares Michelle with her children. It encourages me to do the same. Slowly Michael’s photos began appearing on my nightstand, and I got more comfortable talking about him with my children. I now use Michael’s memory to be a better person, and I am grateful to him for so much of the good fortune I have in my life.
COPE is a small charity today. What I am asking of each of you today is to please bring this information to someone in your life — a friend, a neighbor or a colleague who may benefit from being part of our COPE network.
IT has made a tremendous difference in my life.
I’d like to dedicate this award to my brother Michael, my parents, Ken and Barbara DelVecchio, who somehow kept it together all these year, and to the TWO PEOPLE who love me most, my sister, Tara, and my husband, Marc.
Thank you.
Please share with us your writings about your sibling. Email Karen Flyer at Karen@copefoundation.com for more information.

Bird Sanctuary Workshop for Parents and Children
Sunday, June 7th 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. (RAINDATE: June 14th)
Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge
Join COPE and healer Ethan Waltz on Sunday, June 7th from 2:00-5:00 p.m. for our workshop on “The Healing Power of Nature.” The workshop will be held at Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge, and is open to COPE parents and siblings and their children and grandchildren. Attend our workshop and pack a picnic snack! The workshop is RSVP only!
Healing energies come from many places but what could be a better place to relax, unwind and rejuvenate than in the arms of nature. Come explore the benefits of nature therapy with fellow COPE participants. Explore this experiential workshop by journeying to one of Long Islands beautiful Sanctuaries where we will walk, sit and spend gentle time communing and reconnecting with nature and ourselves. Understanding the rhythms of nature help us make sense of a sometimes chaotic and senseless world. The meaning of Sanctuary is a place of safety and protection, and we will discuss the importance of creating a Sanctuary in your life to help you take time out to rejuvenate. Together we will practice exercises that you can take with you in your times of need and help you integrate into your life. Summer is here, it’s a great reason to come out and see what beautiful secret places that Long Island has to offer.

The Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge is located on the north shore of Long Island, 25 miles east of New York City. This 80-acre refuge is composed of mature oak-hickory forest, a half-mile rocky beach, a brackish pond, and several vernal ponds. The land and waters support a variety of songbirds (particularly warblers during spring migration), mammals, shorebirds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. During the colder months, diving ducks are common offshore, while harbor seals occasionally use the beach and nearby rocks as resting sites. NY State and Federally protected piping plover, least tern, and common tern depend on the Refuge’s rocky shore for foraging and rearing young. The spring bloom at Target Rock is a reminder of its days as a garden estate, with flowering rhododendrons and mountain laurel.

Parent Writing Workshop
COPE Writer’s Workshop Program
Meets Quarterly
COPE House at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow (Field 6A)
COPE parents, join us for the Third Journal Writing Workshop at a date TBD at 7:00 p.m. at the COPE House in Eisenhower Park, and learn how you too, can use the art of writing to help heal. In our first meetings, we explored writings from multiple authors, who shared their grief in a variety of ways. We learned the importance of keeping a journal, and how expressing our thoughts through the written word resonating in a more soulful way. We then began the process of writing responses to our own prompts, which we shared within the warm, safe confines of others ready to begin the journey as well. We learned there is no wrong…just write. We hope that you will take the time to join us for this truly one of a kind workshop. A pen is all that’s required!
Liz Yorio is the founder and facilitator of the Friends for Life Writing Workshop, a thriving writer’s group designed exclusively for Breast Cancer Survivors on Long Island. Her healing Journal Workshops and Anthology Writer’s Groups integrate her innate talent of honoring the individual with her extensive experience in writing workshop facilitation. She has successfully helped numerous clients discover their inner voices through a program that focuses on the fundamentals of writing, using journaling as a healing modality. Woven within the fabric of their lives, Elizabeth’s program has helped survivors delve deeper into the creative process as they learn to take risks with both their writing and themselves. A graduate of SUNY Albany, with a Master’s Degree in Education from Hunter College, Elizabeth taught in New York City for several years. Having worked closely with educators from Columbia University’s Writing Project as well as writing specialists from the Professional Development Lab in New York City’s District 2, Elizabeth has been able to successfully formulate a unique writer’s workshop that incorporates teachings from both youth and adult education. She is currently collaborating on her second Anthology.
You don’t need to attend every workshop. Please bring a writer’s notebook with you. For more information, please email Karen Flyer at karen@copefoundation.com.
