Words from COPE President and Founder,

Lillian Julien

Dear COPE Families,

As a mother, I write about Father’s Day, remembering my children’s father.

I am a mother because of him. If not for him, I would not have my precious children.

Robert Julien was a great father.

He shopped. He carpooled.

He cooked. He barbecued.

He played ball and went to all my children’s games.

He made sure that they were never short on cash.

He called them everyday.

My children knew he loved them.

After my daughter, Michelle, passed, he grieved intensely in his own way.

He kept his feelings to himself. He stopped taking care of himself. He smoked, ate more, and gained a lot of weight. He was the only other person who suffered as deeply as I did.

Every June, I honor the kind, caring, loving father he was. He would have been a great grandfather. I’m sad he didn’t get to experience that and to see what wonderful parents his children are. My son is the father he is today because of him.

After he passed, I found a form for jury duty tucked between the pages of a book. There were lines included for the ages of his children. Next to our daughter, Michelle’s name, he wrote “eternal”.

My thoughts go out to fathers everywhere. You never stop being a father. Your children are always your children. And a father is always a father, always loved, always cherished.

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, PhD, LCSW

The Courage to Grieve

Living with grief demands courage: the courage to keep living; the courage to learn from our losses; the courage to ask for help when we need it, and to persevere in new directions of healing; and the courage to keep moving through self-defeating thoughts, meeting our pain with compassion, and keeping our body and mind in motion as we continue along in the journey of grief and healing.

Sometimes we forget that we are courageous and we need a pep talk.

Here are some inspirational quotes you can use for that:

Courage is not the absence of despair; it is, rather, the capacity to move ahead in spite of despair.

– Rollo May

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.

– Eleanor Roosevelt

Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack, a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.

– Leonard Cohen

We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear.

– Martin Luther King, Jr.

Courage is grace under pressure.

– Ernest Hemingway

We can do anything we want if we stick to it long enough.

– Helen Keller

Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.

– Mary Anne Radmacher

When you walk to the edge of all the light you have and take that first step into the darkness of the unknown, you must believe that one of two things will happen: There will be something solid for you to stand upon, or you will be taught how to fly.

– Patrick Overton

Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point.

– C. S. Lewis

Consult not your fears, but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but what is still possible for you to do.

– Pope John Paul XXIII

Courage is being scared to death … and saddling up anyway.

– John Wayne

The person who risks nothing does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn and feel and change and grow and love and live.

– Leo Buscaglia

You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

– Steve Jobs

A man can only do what he can do. But if he does that each day, he can sleep at night and do it again the next day.

– Albert Schweitzer

Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you. Everything passes away except God; God alone is sufficient.

– St. Teresa of Avila

Courage is fear holding on a minute longer.

– George S. Patton

The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart.

– Robert Green Ingersoll

True courage is like a kite; a contrary wind raises it higher.

– John Petit-Senn

Instead of seeing the rug being pulled from under us, we can learn to dance on the shifting carpet.

– Thomas Crum

It may be that some little root of the sacred tree still lives. Nourish it then, that it may leaf and bloom and fill with singing birds.

– Black Elk

Poem

The Trees

The trees are coming into leaf

Like something almost being said;

The recent buds relax and spread,

Their greenness is a kind of grief.

Is it that they are born again

And we grow old? No, they die too,

Their yearly trick of looking new

Is written down in rings of grain.

Yet still the unresting castles thresh

In fullgrown thickness every May.

Last year is dead, they seem to say,

Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

“My sister will die over and over again for the rest of my life. Grief is forever. It doesn’t go away; it becomes a part of you, step for step, breath for breath. I will never stop grieving Bailey because I will never stop loving her. That’s just how it is. Grief and love are conjoined, you don’t get one without the other. All I can do is love her, and love the world, emulate her by living with daring and spirit and joy.”

Camp Erin® New York City – COPE Foundation

COPE’s Bereavement Camp for Children Ages 6 – 17

August 25 – 27, 2017

It’s sunny! Good bye winter, hello summer!

Sun, summer….CAMP ERIN NYC!

We are very busy interviewing and enrolling campers for this summer’s session. Keep spreading the word. We are procuring supplies, finalizing staff and tweaking our curriculum to provide the best experience we can for our incredibly brave children.

It is not an easy decision to commit to camp – it’s committing to the unknown, when one is already feeling vulnerable. I can say, with the utmost confidence, it is one of the best decisions one can make in helping a child navigate their grief. Being in a safe, supportive and nurturing environment with trained, caring  professionals and dedicated, compassionate volunteers is a recipe for success. We have had five amazing summers and are looking forward to another transformative weekend of hope and healing.

“There are so many beautiful reasons to be happy.”

Find  a reason today!

Ann

About COPE Labyrinth:

COPE Foundation now has a permanent memorial labyrinth in Eisenhower Park’s Memorial Plaza, with bricks and benches dedicated to our children, siblings, and loved ones.

The labyrinth is an ancient symbolic path with healing and spiritual significance. It has been used within many cultures and spiritual traditions throughout the world.

For many, labyrinths represent life’s journey or spiritual pilgrimage.

Walking the labyrinth often produces a calming, centering feeling. This alternating balancing motion can quiet one’s body, mind and spirit, often inducing a receptive state for meditation and contemplation in the center of the labyrinth.
