COPE March Newsletter

Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien
Dear COPE Families:

After the death of someone you love, you listen for them. You wait for signs of reassurance, help, love, the touch, the sound of any presence.”
– Joan Juliet Buck

After the loss of my daughter, I was desperate for a sign of her presence. I talked and talked aloud to her, wanting to feel her near me.

I described my one-way conversations to my therapist and she asked me, “Do you ever sit and listen?”

I never had. So I decided I’d sit and listen and not get up until I heard something. After sitting for I don’t know how long, one word popped into my head—“Meditate.” I knew it was a message that held the key to receiving communication from my daughter.

I tried to meditate. It wasn’t easy for me. It takes practice and I wanted instant gratification. In the wake of my loss, I was filled with feelings of indescribable sadness, discouragement, frustration, anger, anxiety— to name just a few. Struggling to make sense of the unspeakable, I told and retold my story in my thoughts. Often changing the ending, I thought about all the different possibilities that could have changed the outcome My mind was cluttered with chatter as I tried to regain control over what I came to realize couldn’t be controlled. As I struggled to go on living, more thoughts flooded my already overflowing mind. Needless to say, I didn’t succeed in meditating.

In retrospect, I realize how truly difficult it was, in the midst of my grief and the chaos of my emotions, to maintain a practice of meditation. Many years later, I understand how beneficial it would have been to create a place of stillness where I could be free of the thoughts that plagued me and only increased my suffering. Now, I realize that meditation is a means to creating a space within where I can find peace and tranquility. And in that space, I can often feel my daughter’s presence.

Wishing you tranquility,

Love,
Lilly

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

Healing Tip: Clearing the mind with Meditation
Guided meditation or focused breathing (with soft, healing music) can release the negative thoughts—the shoulda, woulda, coulda’s—that only add to our suffering.

Every thought is a seed that creates patterns of thought. Negative thoughts create negative thought patterns.
Action breaks the patterns.
Meditation is an action.

Focus on any area of physical pain, then slowly breathe in…
Breathe out and release the pain.

Slowly breathe in, breathing out and releasing negative thoughts….
Slowly breathe in, breathing out and releasing negative emotions…

Imagine what it might feel like to let go of the thoughts that clutter your mind.

Breathe in the light…hold…and slowly exhale
Breathe in peace…hold…and slowly exhale
Breathe into your heart healing colors & calming energy.

If Time Were Mine

Your love is the space
In which I exist.
Your truth and inspiration
Drives light
Into the darkest corners
Of my life.
If time were mine to give,
I would give it all to you.

We are actively looking for our COPE House, larger space to hold our meetings, house our resources library, and in essence, to be our “home.” If anyone has any personal connections with realtors in the area (preferably on the Nassau/Suffolk border), please email Lillian Julien at ljulien 5@ gmail. com.

If anyone has any news to share with the group or a poem or inspirational story (to potentially be included in a future newsletter if you wish), please email Karen Flyer at karen@ copefoundation. org.

Also, if you would like to have a picture of your child or sibling posted on the COPE website, please email me a jpeg and we will add it to the children’s page. Also, if you have any foundations for your child, we would happily list those on our website.

COPE Golf Outing Event
Monday, May 19th
Muttontown Club in East Norwich, NY
Save the date for COPE’s eighth annual golf outing, to be held this year on Monday, May 19, 2014 at the Muttontown Club in East Norwich, NY. Past year’s events have sold out for golfers and dinner guests, and we look forward to another successful event this year.
At this year’s golf outing, we will be honoring former COPE board member Michael Corpuel and the Corpuel and Brown families who generously donate their camp, Camp Wayne, every year for COPE Camp Erin NYC®. The COPE golf outing is a great opportunity for individuals and organizations to create awareness of their missions or pay tribute to a loved one, and for parents and siblings to honor their child/sibling, as well as the Corpuels and Browns. For those in the camping and camping supply industries, the outing is also an opportunity for exposure amongst would-be campers and camp directors.
Additionally, the outing raises 75% of COPE’s budget for the year, and since we do not ask families to pay for most of the support groups, workshops and events we offer, we rely on this important fundraiser to bring in enough money to fund our programs.
Registration materials will be mailed the first week of March, so please do not delay in sending in your registration once you receive it.

For additional information about sponsoring or attending the golf outing, or volunteering at the event, please contact Erica Berg Gavin, COPE Golf Outing Coordinator, at elberg@verizon.net.
