Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien

Dear COPE Families,

On my flight home from a recent vacation I thought about my trip. Aside from being grateful to escape the frigid temperatures, I realized how much fun I had.

I couldn’t help but think back to an earlier time, after my daughter and husband passed, when I felt, How could I ever be happy again?

I remembered the first time I laughed, and asked myself, How can I be laughing after what’s happened to our family? And then my laughter turned to tears. I thought about how every celebration had become bittersweet. I recalled my father’s words before he passed, promising me I would have joy again in my life, something I could not have imagined.

As time passed, I gradually allowed myself moments of happiness which were followed by feelings of confusion and an underlying sadness.

After many years I finally gave myself permission to experience pleasure, being happy for Michelle, and doing things that made her happy. This poem describes how I began living for the both of us.

As long as I can I will look at this world for the both of us.

As long as I can I will laugh with the birds,

I will sing with the flowers,

I will pray to the stars,

For the both of us.

-Author Unknown

I was happy on my vacation, and noticed the little signs that let me know my daughter and my husband were there watching me, and they were happy I was happy.

Wishing you moments of happiness with warm energy guiding you from within,

Lilly

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, LCSW

Healing Tip: March 2015

Massage can yield great benefits to those who are grieving. One of the reasons for this is that massage can activate the touch receptors in the skin. This, in turn, releases oxytocin, a hormone that produces excellent effects on a person’s well-being and relaxation. Research has found that adults who were grieving the death of a loved one felt that the massages actually helped them to balance the need for grieving with the need to adapt to life after their loss.

Here are seven ways that massage can help you cope with your grief:

  • Massage can loosen tight muscles and can have a calming and balancing effect on your nervous system
  • Massage can improve overall sense of well-being and energy levels
  • Massage can bring relief from your headaches caused by tension
  • Massage can improve your circulation and breathing
  • Massage can assist in alleviating the physical and emotional stress stored in your body
  • Massage helps your lymphatic drainage system to get rid of toxins and thus revitalize your blood flow
  • Massage mentally allows you to totally ‘switch-off’ giving you time to bring new thoughts into your mind.

Poem

The mention of my child’s name

by Kim Knapp

The mention of my child’s name

May bring tears to my eyes,

But it never fails to bring

Music to my ears.

If you are really my friend,

Let me hear the beautiful music of her name.

It soothes my broken heart

And sings to my soul.

COPE Sibling Column

March 2015

When I must leave you for a little while, please do not grieve and shed wild tears

And hug your sorrow to you through the years,

But start out bravely with a gallant smile;

And for my sake in my name

Live on and do all things the same.

Feed not into your loneliness on empty days,

But fill each waking hour in useful ways,

Reach out your hand

In comfort and in cheer

And I in turn will comfort you

And hold you near;

And never, never be afraid to die

For I am waiting for you in the sky.

Danny MacDougall we love and miss you. We’ll be waiting to meet you.

Music Therapy Workshop for Parents and Adult Siblings

Wednesday, March 18th COPE House in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow (Field 6A)

7:00 p.m. SHARP

Join COPE and board certified music therapist Jon Sampson for our next monthly “Healing from the Inside Out” program sponsored by a generous grant from the Ann Marsden Irvin Fund at the Long Island Community Foundation. The Music workshop will be held on Wednesday, March 18th at 7:00 p.m. at the COPE House in Eisenhower Park, East Meadow (Field 6A).

The Eternal Child Archetype: Healing Through Creativity And Play In Music Therapy

Without a doubt, losing a child is one of the most painful traumas a person can experience. A powerful way to honor your child’s memory is to nurture yourself. Yet how do you find a balance between holding onto the positive and healthy memories, but also staying open to the newness life has to offer?

Each of us is born into the world with a “Child Archetype” – the part of us that is enchanted with life, and sees the world as a safe and magical place to explore. Music therapy offers a range of tools to connect you to your innate creativity, which is a portal to reconnecting with your own “Eternal Child”.

Creativity goes beyond making art or music. Each of our thoughts, feelings, intentions and actions are forces of creativity we play with throughout life. This will be an experiential lecture and performance. No artistic background necessary. Come with the intention to simply to be uplifted and engaged if you so choose! While participation is not mandatory, you will have the opportunity to play and express what’s in your heart through experiential voice and movement activities.

Jon Samson MA MTBC is a board certified music therapist and teacher. He runs a private practice in Brooklyn, NY, where he works with children and adults on reaching their highest creative potential. Jon has produced 4 award-winning CD’s for children and the young at heart, and has produced music for Sounds True audio programs by renowned teachers Andrew Harvey and Caroline Myss.   He was also an audio engineer for the Oscar Nominated film, Beasts Of The Southern Wild. For more information, visit www.cocreativemusic.com.

You MUST RSVP for this workshop to Karen Flyer at Karen@copefoundation.com by Friday, March 13th! Limit of 25 people, first come, first served!

For more information about this workshop or other upcoming workshops, please email Karen Flyer at karen@copefoundation.com.

Hi Everyone,

Hard to think of summer when you see your breath in your own living room! Let the thoughts of summer sneak in and keep you warm!

We have started receiving applications from campers, so that means summer is on the horizon. It always reenergizes us to remember the impact we have on these fragile children. To get that done, we rely on the generosity of others.

We are busy planning our Camp Erin NYC and COPE Sibling Bowling Event, April 28 at Chelsea Piers! Bigger and better and as much fun as last year!

Stay warm and safe and summer will be here…….. Don’t rush the time, cherish the moments even if they are cold!

COPE Golf Outing Event

Monday, May 18th

Muttontown Club in East Norwich, NY

Register now for COPE’s eighth annual golf outing, to be held this year on Monday, May 18, 2015 at the Muttontown Club in East Norwich, NY.  Past year’s events have sold out for golfers and dinner guests, and we look forward to another successful event this year.

At this year’s golf outing, we will be honoring Rich “Big Daddy” Salgado, CEO & Founder of Coastal Advisors LLC. We will also be awarding a special honor of recognition to COPE sibling Kristen Del Vecchio Glosserman. The COPE golf outing is a great opportunity for individuals and organizations to create awareness of their missions or pay tribute to a loved one, and for parents and siblings to honor their child/sibling, as well as Rich Salgado and Kristen Glosserman.

Additionally, the outing raises 75% of COPE’s budget for the year, and since we do not ask families to pay for most of the support groups, workshops and events we offer, we rely on this important fundraiser to bring in enough money to fund our programs.

Registration materials will be mailed soon; however, please do not wait! Click on this link (add link https://app.etapestry.com/hosted/COPE/Registration.html ) to our website to register for golf, check out our new sponsorship opportunities, Tee Signs, Pin Flags, etc.

For additional information about sponsoring or attending the golf outing, or volunteering at the event, please contact Cindy Mardenfeld, COPE Golf Outing Director, at cindy@mardenfeld.com.

COPE Writer’s Workshop Program

Meets Quarterly: Next Meeting is Tuesday, March 24th at 7 p.m.

COPE House at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow (Field 6A)

COPE parents, join us for the Second Journal Writing Workshop on Tuesday, March 24th at 7:00 p.m. at the COPE House in Eisenhower Park, and learn how you too, can use the art of writing to help heal. In our first meeting, we explored writings from multiple authors, who shared their grief in a variety of ways. We learned the importance of keeping a journal, and how expressing our thoughts through the written word resonating in a more soulful way. We then began the process of writing responses to our own prompts, which we shared within the warm, safe confines of others ready to begin the journey as well.   We learned there is no wrong…just write. We hope that you will take the time to join us for this truly one of a kind workshop. A pen is all that’s required!

Liz Yorio is the founder and facilitator of the Friends for Life Writing Workshop, a thriving writer’s group designed exclusively for Breast Cancer Survivors on Long Island. Her healing Journal Workshops and Anthology Writer’s Groups integrate her innate talent of honoring the individual with her extensive experience in writing workshop facilitation. She has successfully helped numerous clients discover their inner voices through a program that focuses on the fundamentals of writing, using journaling as a healing modality.   Woven within the fabric of their lives, Elizabeth’s program has helped survivors delve deeper into the creative process as they learn to take risks with both their writing and themselves. A graduate of SUNY Albany, with a Master’s Degree in Education from Hunter College, Elizabeth taught in New York City for several years. Having worked closely with educators from Columbia University’s Writing Project as well as writing specialists from the Professional Development Lab in New York City’s District 2, Elizabeth has been able to successfully formulate a unique writer’s workshop that incorporates teachings from both youth and adult education. She is currently collaborating on her second Anthology.

You don’t need to attend every workshop. Please bring a writer’s notebook with you. For more information, please email Karen Flyer at karen@copefoundation.com.
