Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien

The 14th annual COPE Walk on Sunday, September 25th, is a day to honor your loved one and also to connect with family and friends. The day is filled with hugs from others who understand and care.

If you’ve walked with us in the past, you know how meaningful it is to have the support of each other on a day that is dedicated to our children and siblings. If you haven’t walked with us, the Long Beach boardwalk is a beautiful and peaceful setting in which to walk and feel connected to your cherished loved ones.

Creating a “team” for your child or sibling enables friends and family to support you and to remember someone who has touched their lives. For you, this is an opportunity to connect with the people who were important to your child or sibling.

It can be challenging for those closest to you to know how to help. Walking with you gives them an opportunity to express their love and show they care. Even if they are unable to walk with you, they can make a donation to support the organization that has helped and continues to help you.

If joining our 14th annual COPE Walk on Sunday, September 25th, is something that inspires you, visit and follow the easy steps to create a team with precious pictures and inspiring words. Please feel free to contact Stacey for assistance.

The COPE Walk is an event that connects us. Take advantage of this day to let the people in your life show you their love and support.

Enjoy the rest of summer and wishing you a safe Labor Day weekend,

Lilly

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, PhD, LCSW

Gratitude and Grief

Gratitude can be one of the most powerful grief healing tools we have. It may sound like an oxymoron: Gratitude and grief are two words whose definitions are as far apart as you can get.

So is it possible to be BOTH grateful and grieving? Have you ever thought of your grief as being a gift? I am sure you are shaking your head no right now. My loss a gift-are you crazy!!!

But you may be able to look on your grief as an UNWANTED GIFT, but a GIFT all the same. It is the gift of grief, the price we have to pay for relationships and the deep love for those we have lost and for that, it may be possible to be grateful. Without the deep love and connections we have had, we would not be grieving.

Like any skill worth having or tool worth using, gratitude requires practice. Gratitude helps us see our situations in ways that can lessen anxiety, and could expand our thinking.

If you don’t already practice Gratitude it wouldn’t hurt to try it. It may be hard at first especially when you do not feel grateful for anything. But start small. Maybe you can be grateful for your morning coffee or tea, the birds singing outside, a warm bed. It is noticing the small things that we take for granted. It is being aware. It doesn’t mean that we should stop grieving the loss, but there is always a choice in how the loss is played out.

Here are some ways you can practice Gratitude:

Keep a gratitude journal – Start by giving thanks for one thing each day, it is amazing when you look back after a period of time how much can change.

Make a gratitude jar or board – Write one thing you are grateful for each day and put it in the jar or on your board.

Give at least one compliment daily. It can be to a person, or it can be asking someone to share your appreciation of something else. “Isn’t it a beautiful day?” You can always compliment yourself. Self-love is the first step into loving people and the world around you.

Practice Mindfulness to appreciate each moment. Focus on the present moment. Notice what’s all around you. Use all of your senses: What do you see, feel, hear, smell, or taste? Sometimes I have been grateful for a good cry, you can call them healing tears.

Poem

Life is Eternal

If wishing makes it so

won’t you let me know

that life is eternal

and love is immortal

and death is only a horizon

Life is eternal

as we move into the light

and a horizon is nothing

save the limit of our sight

— from the song, Life is Eternal
by Carly Simon and Teesa Gohl

Gratitude in Grief: Finding Daily Joy and a Life of Purpose Following the Death of my Son

by Kelly S. Buckley

Gratitude In Grief chronicles a mother’s journey into the unimaginable, the death of her son. The book is a personal journal of reflection in the days following the death, and the unexpected approach she took in dealing with her grief that changed her forever. To the surprise of many, this mother made a choice to look for “one little thing” to be thankful for each day while coping with her loss. This daily gratitude changed the process of her grief, but also sparked a reflection on life, purpose and faith that has changed the author forever. By documenting the events surrounding her son’s death in the days and months afterwards, Kelly Buckley gives readers a first hand glimpse at the unbreakable bonds of love, the power of gratitude and the freedom that purpose in your life grants you. Through heartache and humor it provides hope and a nontraditional path through grief for those suffering loss in their own lives. An absolute read for anyone experiencing loss and a wake up call for others to be present in your life, to listen to your inner voice, and to live your life to the fullest.

If you have a book to recommend which you think will help our families along their path of healing, please email Stacey at scareri@copefoundation.com.
