Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien

The New Year brings the dread of another anniversary for my daughter and husband who passed in late January, on the same date eight years apart. All my emotions rise to the surface and I’m filled with overwhelming sadness. Even after so many years…

This timely email link gives words to what I am feeling. In a reply to a young man dealing with grief, an old man writes about the waves of grief and how they change with time.

http://www.thatericalper.com/2015/08/16/person-is-asking-for-advice-hn-how-to-deal-with-grief-this-reply-is-incredible/

“In the beginning, the waves don’t even give you time to catch your breath, All you can do is hang on and float”

But in time, the waves aren’t as tall and come further apart. And “in between waves, there is life.”

And though years and even decades pass, the waves never stop. But “on an anniversary, you can see it coming, and for the most part, prepare yourself. And when it washes over you, you know that somehow you will, again, come out the other side.”

I’ve learned to prepare — to construct a plan. This year, it’s scheduling treatments to nurture myself; to retreat and find relaxation and calm; to look at pictures and feel that missing connection. In these days leading up to the anniversary, I realize the fragility of this plan. I know that in an instant that wave can come and defeat my intentions. I may not be able to carry out the plan or reach for the tools. But having them empowers me.

“The waves never stop coming,” the old man says, “and somehow you don’t really want them to. But you learn that you’ll survive them. And other waves will come. And you’ll survive them too.”

Though the remembering is painful, I wouldn’t want to forget. The pain and the love are all a part of me.

“My scars are a testament to the love and the relationship that I had for and with that person. And if the scar is deep, so was the love. So be it. Scars are a testament to life. Scars are a testament that I can love deeply and live deeply and be cut, or even gouged, and that I can heal and continue to live and continue to love.”

Stay Warm. Stay Safe,

Lilly

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, PhD, LCSW

After the initial shock of any type of loss or trauma everyone will navigate through the process of grieving. For those who are on this journey, it is important to have faith in yourself and your inner compass that guides you. You may find opportunities for growth and happiness in the most unexpected places, ready to be seized if you’re open to recognizing and embracing them. I don’t believe we ever get over a significant loss, but we do learn to move through it and live with it, and perhaps even learn to use it creatively to find our life’s purpose as well as harvest its lessons.

Six Mindful Strategies to Recover from Trauma, Loss & Change

  1. Reach out for Support: Don’t try to bear your trauma alone. Ask for assistance from your friends, spiritual leaders, support groups and professionals.
  1. Sit Quietly and Reflect: No matter the severity of your trauma, sit quietly and ask yourself, “Historically have I experienced other challenges in my life and how did I navigate through them?” Now use these past experiences to tap into your internal courage and strength and explore if you can implement the same strategies again.
  1. Trust Your Inner Resources: Once you realize that you survived other traumas before now trust in yourself to know that you have the ability to get through your present challenge.
  1. Learn to Keep Yourself Centered through the Unbearable Feelings of Grief: When the waves of sadness and helplessness wash over you initially feel the emotion and it’s depth but then start to breathe through the grief with slow deep breaths. This will help you stay grounded and bring you back to the present.
  1. Start Imagining a New Life: Even though you are experiencing immense grief start to imagine and invent in your mind’s eye a new future for yourself.
  1. Practice Mindfulness: While doing grounding practices such as meditation, yoga, or even walks in nature remember that your loss is cyclical like the seasons. Even when we are in the depths of winter we know that eventually it will become more manageable with advent of summer. Learn to tolerate and pace yourself through the most severe times.

Poem

COPE Parent Linda Comac shares a poem written by her son, Alan Jacobs, born 1/30/86, died 1/10/15.

Wanderer

Tread purposefully

we of no consequence

for no heart beats for you

save your own

Tread softly

we of deep breath and sigh

for why conspire

when truth stands alone

Tread eternally

we of tortured soul

for the path ahead

is an ever winding road

Wise Mind, Open Mind: Finding Purpose and Meaning in Times of Crisis, Loss, and Change

by Ronald Alexander PhD

Though it’s nearly impossible to imagine, times of personal crisis and upheaval are opportunities for self-reinvention and heightened artistic expression. Whether you are healing from a severed relationship, experiencing a job loss, or coping with another traumatic life transition, you can renew your strength and find new passion and purpose after things fall apart.

Wise Mind, Open Mind offers a powerful three-step mindfulness approach to help you navigate times of unwanted change, rediscover your inner well of creativity, and move forward with passion and purpose. This book combines techniques drawn from contemporary mind-body approaches, Buddhist psychology, mindfulness, creative thinking, and positive psychology to show you how to tap into your gifts and create a practical plan for personal transformation that will help you move through the challenges you face. You’ll learn to overcome the five common hindrances that may be keeping you from true fulfillment and happiness. Finally, you’ll be able to embrace your circumstances, utilizing them to create a renewed personal vision and welcome new possibilities and greater creativity into your life.

If you have a book to recommend which you think will help our families along their path of healing, please email Stacey at scareri@copefoundation.com.

COPE Parent Column

February 2016

From COPE Parent Rose Mary Latanich:

This is a piece of artwork my son, Andrew Latanich did about a year before he died.  He would take pictures with his camera then develop the film.  He would use the negatives from the film to paint his simple pictures. I think this was a picture of some sort of light he captured at night.

After Andrew died I looked at this design and it took my breath away.  I could see a letter C – Andrew’s older brother is Christian, I could see an S – he has a sister named Sarah.  I could also see a lower case r.  Andrew’s two other sisters are Rachel and Rebekah.  If you hold the design a certain way I see a Z for Zoe (his niece was born three years after Andrew’s death).  Turn the Z around and you have an N for Noah (his nephew born a year ago). The lower case r once you flip that around I see a J for Julian – Zoe’s brother born two years ago.   I had this design tattooed on my arm when I turned 60 five years ago.

Thank you for letting me share my story.

Rose Mary Latanich – Andrew’s mom

COPE Individual Support, or “Buddy System”

For those bereaved parents and siblings not ready for a support group, or who wish to augment their support group experience with individual support, COPE offers a “buddy system.”  If you are in need of a buddy (a parent or sibling who shares your particular loss), OR if you wish to act as a buddy to a newly bereaved parent or sibling, please contact Stacey Careri at scareri@copefoundation.com.  Peer support is truly at the heart of COPE!
